Lifestyle and Entertainment in Yangzhou PDF
By:Lucie B. Olivová,Vibeke Børdahl
Published on 2009 by NIAS Press

The Chinese city of Yangzhou has been of great cultural significance for many centuries, despite its destruction by invaders in the 17th and 19th centuries. It was a site of virtual pilgrimage for aspiring members of the Chinese educated class during the Ming and Qing periods. Moreover, because it was one of the foremost commercial centres during the late imperial period, it was the place where the merchant and scholarly classes merged to set new standards of taste and to create a cultural milieu quite unlike that of other cities, even other major centres in the region. The luxurious elegance of its gardens and the eminence of its artistic traditions meant that Yangzhou set aesthetic standards for the entire realm for much of the late imperial age. Over the years, particular regional forms of art and entertainment arose here, too, some surviving into the present time.

Audiences PDF
By:Ian Christie
Published on 2012 by Amsterdam University Press

|This timely volume engages with one of the most important shifts in recent film studies: the turn away from text-based analysis towards the viewer. Historically, this marks a return to early interest in the effect of film on the audience by psychoanalysts and psychologists, which was overtaken by concern with the 'effects' of film, linked to calls for censorship and moral panics rather than to understanding the mental and behavioral world of the spectator. Early cinema history has revealed the diversity of film-viewing habits, while traditional 'box office' studies, which treated the audience initially as a homogeneous market, have been replaced by the study of individual consumers and their motivations. Latterly, there has been a marked turn towards more sophisticated economic and sociological analysis of attendance data. And as the film experience fragments across multiple formats, the perceptual and cognitive experience of the individual viewer (who is also an auditor) has become increasingly accessible. With contributions from Gregory Waller, John Sedgwick and Martin Barker, this work spans the spectrum of contemporary audience studies, revealing work being done on local, non-theatrical and live digital transmission audiences, and on the relative attraction of large-scale, domestic and mobile platforms.|--Publisher's website.

Published on 2013-05-14 by Phaidon Press

Marks of Excellence (first published 1997) offers a rigorous exploration of the trademark: its history, development, style, classification and relevance in today's world. The book includes extensive discussion of its origins in heraldry, monograms, owner's marks and certificates of origins, and also contains a comprehensive taxonomy of trademarks and an alphabetical index of trademark themes. An invaluable reference tool for design students and graphic designers, the original book is packed with nearly 600 illustrations of both rare and instantly recognizable trademarks, logos, signs, advertisements, and the images that inspired them. This revised and expanded edition includes nearly 500 new images and 60 pages of new material, bringing the successful title right up to date. Whilst keeping much in common with the original book, this edition, in appearance and substance, adds so much that it will still appeal to owners of the old book.

The Art of the Patent PDF

Published on 2011-09-01 by

Most patents are what you would expect from a government doucment: downright boring. Yet the drawings on some are absolutely amazing, with beautiful line-art drawings that show in stunning detail the inner workings of everything from farming machines to airplanes to rockets. Join us on a tour of some of the best patent drawings ever created, as well as a glimpse of some of our most historically significant patents, spanning over 200 years of patent art.Since patent dratsman are not listed on patent documents, the artwork they create remains annonymous. This book brings out the best of those. With some interesting discussion on tools the draftsman use, and some of the more important patent drafting rules issued by the US Patent & Trademark Office, this book will be appreciated by anyone interested in mechanical drawings, line-art illustrations, and fascinating milestones in patent history. Kevin Prince, an inventor and US Patent Agent, has collected a unique set of patent art over five years as a patent researcher, taking note along the way of thoses patents having exceptional artwork. Now he's brought this collection to the public, showcasing masterfully illustrated inventions from over two centuries. You will be surprised at what some of these artists created--many with just a pen and paper--as far back as 1794 with Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin.

Musical Theatre, Realism and Entertainment PDF
By:Dr Millie Taylor
Published on 2013-01-28 by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.

What is it about musical theatre that audiences find entertaining? What are the features that lead to its ability to stimulate emotional attachment, to move and to give pleasure? Beginning from the passion musical theatre performances arouse and their ubiquity in London's West End and on Broadway this book explores the ways in which musical theatre reaches out to and involves its audiences. It investigates how pleasure is stimulated by vocal, musical and spectacular performances. Early discussions centre on the construction of the composed text, but then attention is given to performance and audience response. Musical theatre contains disruptions and dissonances in its multiple texts, it allows gaps for audiences to read playfully. This combines with the voluptuous sensations of embodied emotion, contagiously and viscerally shared between audience and stage, and augmented through the presence of voice and music. A number of features are discovered in the construction of musical theatre performance texts that allow them to engage the intense emotional attachment of their audiences and so achieve enormous popularity. In doing this, the book challenges the conception of musical theatre as 'only entertainment'. Entertainment instead becomes a desirable, ephemeral and playful concept.

Le Tumulte Noir PDF
By:Jody Blake
Published on 1999-01-01 by Penn State Press

Jody Blake demonstrates in this book that although the impact of African-American music and dance in France was constant from 1900 to 1930, it was not unchanging. This was due in part to the stylistic development and diversity of African-American music and dance, from the prewar cakewalk and ragtime to the postwar Charleston and jazz. Successive groups of modernists, beginning with the Matisse and Picasso circle in the 1900s and concluding with the Surrealists and Purists in the 1920s, constructed different versions of la musique and la danse negre. Manifested in creative and critical works, these responses to African-American music and dance reflected the modernists' varying artistic agendas and historical climates.
